General Details
Arlington Sussex - St Pancras churchThe Domesday book records the village as Erlington in 1086.

The small peaceful village of Arlington in East Sussex lies off the main A27 coast road, about 5 miles from Eastbourne . It has been in existence since Roman times, when the village lay to the south of the church. During Saxon times the Cuckmere river would have been tidal to at least Michealham Priory, so this would make a good defensive position on the edge of the great forest of Andredsweald. The church was originally buillt by the Saxons as a wooden church which seems to have been burnt down possibly by Viking raiders . In later Saxon times a new church was built over the old one using Roman bricks from the nearby Roman road which went from Lewes to Pevensey along the inside edge of the South Downs.

During the 1250's the church was enlarged , possibly to accomodate people escaping into the rural areas to escape the Black Death .

The village has remained rural throughout the middle ages until the present day.

Many thanks to the lady with the black dog who accompanied me while I was photographing the church on April 1st 2009 .
